French Club Celebrated Mardi Gras in Fashion

French students created Mardi Gras masks and cooked "beignets aux pommes" a traditional French pastry for the Mardi Gras celebration. "Beignets aux pommes" are apple fritters. The students took turns preparing the batter and frying them as others began their Mardi Gras masks. Glitter, feathers and sequins were the favorite decorating materials this year and many decided to put their names right on the front of their masks.

Mardi Gras is celebrated in many French speaking countries around the world due to the strong influence of the Catholic church throughout French history. French kings were actually blessed by the Roman Catholic pope to establish their absolute power during their reign. Many French holidays therefore revolve around the catholic religious holidays. Over the centuries Mardi Gras, which is the last Tuesday before lent, has become a boisterous festival where people disguise themselves in elaborately designed costumes and masks and eat heartily throughout the day. The original religious foundation of the celebration has given way to enjoying good eating and celebrating with friends much as the French Club students did.

The next French Club meeting will actually be a day long field trip on April 7. Students will see "Les Miserables" a tragic French story that has captured the hearts of people everywhere as they follow Jean Val Jean and Cosette through their difficult life stories. This will be followed by a sumptuous French luncheon at the French hotel Sofitel in Bloomington. Please contact Madame Hopen with any questions you have regarding French Club activities.

MnACC

Presented their 2003 College Fair

The annual MnACC College Fair was held during March at Humboldt High School. This exciting college fair, sponsored by the Minnesota Association of Counselors of Color, with up to 35 colleges represented took place on Wednesday, March 19 from 8:40 to 11:00 in the senior high gym. Representatives from several schools in Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Iowa visited with Humboldt students in grades 10 through 11.

MnACC's primary goal is to increase the number of college-bound students of color through outreach programs such as the MnACC College Fair. The end goal is that students of color find the right "fit" to help them plan for their future educational needs. Once again this was an exciting event held for Humboldt students and coordinated by Ms. Atkinson in the Career Resource Center.

From Steve Lindberg

Greetings and Welcome from Humboldt Sr. High, the best high school in the city of St. Paul!

As I write this we are just finishing our last week for the second trimester.  Staff and students are preparing for their finals at the end of this week.  Third trimester will be starting on Monday March 17th, which leaves us with 12 weeks left of the school year.  For our seniors the time is drawing close for planning for graduation which is on Tuesday June 3, 2003 at 8:00 PM.  This is a change from the published calendar.  Please check your calendars to make sure you have it correctly.

We are getting ready for registration for our 9-11th graders for  next year.  Counselors will be working with students and families to make sure they sign up for the Academy of their choice.  The three academies will be Humanities, SETA (science, engineering & technology), and CLA (Community Leadership).  As parents and students look at which academy they choose that will also impact what courses they  select.  I have mentioned our three 10 – 12 grade academies in previous newsletters and they will be in place for their pilot year in the fall of 2003.  We are asking each student to sign up for one of the academies.  Only incoming tenth graders will be responsible for completing all future academy requirements for graduation.  The 9th grade academy will continue to function as they enter year two.  We are very pleased with the results of the 9th grade academy and look forward to the continuation of our Small Learning Community efforts to accomplish the five "C" that I talked about in the January issue of "The Corner", Caring staff, Cognitive Challenge (academic rigor), Supportive Culture, Community of student leaders, and connections to colleges.

Extensive national research shows that the creation of academies raises student achievement, increases completion of college-level courses, improves school climate, and lifts attendance and graduation rates. The creation of academies within Humboldt will provide our students with the best of two worlds: small school connections and big school opportunities.  We look forward to the changes which we’re making, as we continue to raise the expectation for all students.

Humboldt Students to Volunteer

in the Dominican Republic This Summer

Last year, advanced students in Ms. Atienzo's Spanish class at Humboldt were introduced to a volunteer program called Los Amigos de las Americas. Two of our students, Janai Beck, 17, and Cynthia Morales, 18, applied for and were accepted into the program. Janai and Cynthia had to demonstrate their ability to speak Spanish as well as prove their leadership abilities and willingness to work.

Originally Janai and Cynthia thought they would be volunteering in Costa Rica, but they were recently informed that they will be volunteering in the Dominican Republic, an island in the Caribbean. The towns of Azua and Dajabon determined that their youth need to learn more about health issues and have an interest in learning English. Therefore, Janai will travel to Azua for seven weeks and Cynthia will travel to Dajabon for eight weeks this summer along with other volunteers to work with Dominican youth.

"I am very excited to work with children. I am also excited to live with a Dominican family. I hope to become part of the family and participate in family activities.", said Janai. "I am excited to learn about Dominican culture!", said Cynthia.

Janai and Cynthia are doing fundraising to pay for the cost of their trip as well as the materials needed for the students they will work with. They have done everything from writing letters for donations to collecting cans to selling oranges. The next fundraiser is a live and silent auction with music and food to be held Sunday, April 27th from 1:30pm to 5:30pm at Holiday Inn West at 394 and 169 in Minnetonka. Call 612-729-7191 for more information.

Your contributions to Janai and Cynthia are greatly appreciated. Checks may be made to Los Amigos de las Americas and can be sent to Humboldt S.H.S., c/o Ms. Atienzo, World Language Department, 30 E. Baker St., St. Paul, MN 55107.

Janai Beck and Cynthia Morales are both Spanish IV students with Ms. Atienzo at Humboldt. Janai is the daughter of Janette Green and Cynthia is the daughter of Jackie Morales.
