Humboldt High School April 14, 2008 Site Council Minutes Members Present: Jennifer -Purtell (parent, co-chair), Valerie Atkinson (staff, co-chair), Suzanne Fields (parent), Lauren Rekonen (staff, secretary), Bonnie Bellows (staff), Mike Sodomka (principal), Beverly Babcock (staff, alternate), Joe Laconic (staff), Derby Campo (community, alternate), Kari Larson (community), Catherine Farrell (parent), Marilyn Mauritz (staff, alternate), Tom Kranz (staff, union representative) Guests: Derek Johnson and Mary Vogel (Center for Changing Landscapes), Isreal Moses (Assistant Principal) Members Not Present: Aaron Perrine (staff), Jodi Brennen (community), Tim Hausker (staff), student representative, Andy Mosca (parent) Agenda: 1. Approval of Agenda: V. Atkinson a. Motion to approve agenda made by J. Purtell, seconded by J. Laconic. Unanimously approved. 2. Approval of March 10, 2008 minutes: J. Purtell a. Motion to approve minutes made by J. Purtell, seconded by J. Laconic. Unanimously approved. 3. Open Forum: a. Derby Campo: A College Access Bonanza will be held on Tuesday, May 6th. This will be a West Side community event with entertainment, dancing, music, food, and informational break-out sessions. It will be in the Humboldt cafeteria from 5:30-7:00. b. Valerie Atkinson: National Honor Society and Americorps volunteer Ellyn Couillard put on a highly successful blood drive. 47 units of blood were given, which was reported to be an excellent number. c. Beverly Babcock: We need to be conscious of liquids in the garbage cans because of the extra work that is created for the custodians. We have an excellent custodial staff and we don’t want to create extra work for them. d. Joe Laconic: Last week there was a Project Lead the Way conference. Six Humboldt students are involved in this engineering program and they have had several successes, including bringing up their math skills and getting into college 4. Center for Changing Landscapes: Derek Johnson and Mary Vogel a. The Center for Changing Lanscapes is an interdisciplinary college at the University of Minnesota. They design buildings and landscaping. b. They are working on the West Side Circulator to help create a design to be utilized as a learning experience. They would like to create a design project to address some of the design issues at Humboldt, such as access to the main entrance from the parking lots. This design project would be some sort of a bus stop for the West Side Circulator. c. They are interested in building a physical presence for the West Side Circulator to help show the importance and utility of the West Side Circulator. They are particularly interested in Humboldt as a site because of its public nature and the large volume of students and visitors to the building. d. They are interesting in using this structure to enhance our school’s environmental focus. e. They want the bus to be not just transportation but also a display place for the neighborhood, including announcements, photographs, and artwork. f. The prime concern with this structure is safety. g. The structure that they want to build here at the corner of Baker and Livingston has not been designed yet because they want to learn more about Humboldt, our vision, and our needs. They would like the design to be done by the end of August. h. Derek and Mary are very concerned with understanding all of the issues, concerns, and needs of Humboldt and the community. i. Mary will attend Friday’s Leadership committee meeting. 5. SCIP (School Continuous Improvement Plan): I. Moses a. This document outlines what our plan is, what outcomes we hope to accomplish, and how we will achieve our goals. This is a data-driven document. b. The SCIP must be completed by April 28, 2008. c. Our SCIP will reflect our new Environmental, Career and Technology focus. d. Our outcomes in the SCIP are nearly finalized. We are staying focused on achievement, closing the achievement gap, graduation rates, and retention. e. The data analysis is based off of MCA test scores and graduation rates. There are 38 components, or sub-categories of students. f. There will an extra site council meeting on April 28th to finalize and sign the SCIP. 6. Principal’s Report: M. Sodomka a. Budget down approximately $200,000 after inflation and raises, (actually down $67,000) for the ’08-’09 school year. i. Projected at 818 students for ‘08-‘09, a decline of 67 students from ’07-’08. ii. Some staffing positions will need to be cut. We will try to keep the cuts away from teaching positions in order to keep class sizes small. iii. We will continue to fund a 0.4 elective teacher at junior high to maintain elective offerings for the students. iv. We will continue to fund curriculum coaching positions to maintain our focus on instruction. v. We will continue to fund existing ELL staff to continue to draw in the district’s largest sector of incoming students. vi. Exact cuts will be revealed at the next Site Council Meeting b. environmental Studies and College and Career Prep Transition i. This transition is a gradual phase. ‘08-‘09 will be instruction-focused, ‘09-‘10 will be Career Prep focused. ii. A position has been created to assist with the transition to Environmental and Career Prep program. c. Tomorrow (4/15/08) and Wednesday (4/16/08) are testing days. 9th, 10th, and 11th grades will be testing from 7:30 – 9:44 both days. d. There was a community meeting here at Humboldt on March 18, 2008. i. 120 attendees ii. purpose to inform of changes at Humboldt e. Humboldt Robotics Team utilized Ecolab funding to create, design, and manipulate a robot. They competed a few weeks ago and placed 19th out of 54 teams. f. To maintain our focus on College and Career prep, non-profit organization Genesis Works recruited students to train them for paid positions and scholarships in the technology sector. g. Athena Award Winner this year is Kayla Fearing. The award goes to an outstanding female athlete each year. h. Prom is this Saturday at the Crown Plaza. i. Conferences are Thursday, April 24th from 4:00 – 6:55. j. The 30th of April is an early release day. k. The Humboldt H-Club met last week to honor Humboldt athlete alumni. One of our alumni and honorees Lewis Saad had a heart attack during dinner and passed away. The Humboldt community is deeply saddened by this event and Mr. Saad will be missed.
