Continuing with Revitalization Plan

Revitalization Plan for Humboldt Schools

Humboldt Junior and Senior High School with input from students, staff and community members, submitted a plan to the district office to revitalize our to avoid State sanctions due to student test performance on the MCA II tests.  The plan involves focusing our classes around environmental studies and college and career technical education planning.  We also included in the proposals to bring the district’s secondary staff development team to Humboldt, making every classroom a “model” classroom.

Humboldt has eight college access programs currently, to support our students as they prepare for life beyond high school.  Over 50% of our students participate in these programs.  We also have strong career and technical education (CTE) programs, such our auto tech program, computer tech program, culinary arts and child development programs.  We will work to support and expand our college access and career and technical education programs.  We plan to expand our internship programs with areas businesses while increasing the number of students taking PSEO courses at area universities, including St. Paul College.  We are also working with the district to support our CTE programs.

Humboldt will be exploring opportunities to support our new environmental studies program.  We are building relationships with universities, non-profits, and area businesses to support this program.  We are also exploring successful environmental studies programs within other schools/programs to replicate their successes at Humboldt.

Every classroom within Humboldt will be a “model” classroom.  We will be working with the district to bring in Disciplinary Literacy (DL) training for all teachers.  Disciplinary Literacy develops ways of teaching that challenge students to learn both the concepts of a discipline and its habits of thinking. For example, a student learning history will learn not only facts and dates but also the basics of historical inquiry, such as the sources an historian uses. It is a method used to expand both the knowledge and intellectual capacities of all levels of students.  We will be working with the district staff development team to support this endeavor.

Our plan builds on our strengths while maintaining our focus on learning.  We expect every student to graduate prepared to go to college, no matter what path they chose.  We are not doing whole sale changes to our school, rather, enhancing existing programs and bringing a new focus to others.  Humboldt is a great school; we look forward to working with you to make it even better!  Please consider coming to “Breakfast with the Principal” on February 11th from 9:00-10:30 AM to discuss this further.
