Sahmad's Student profile and photo will be shown on KSTC_TV Ch 45 during the Girls State Basketball Tournament( march 18-21) Forty high school juniors from communities throughout the state have been selected as the 2009 ExCEL Award winners. Sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League and the AAA Clubs of Minnesota, ExCEL — Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership — is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for high school juniors. Students who are active in fine arts and athletic activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens are eligible for the award. “The 2009 Excel award winners are extraordinary individuals who shine throughout the year with a strong sense of school pride and community loyalty,” said Lisa Lissimore, the League associate director who oversees the program. “These students volunteer at nursing homes, coach Little League teams, serve meals to the homeless, teach Sunday school, and tutor other students. They demonstrate their commitment to serve others daily.” “As a responsible, proactive community partner, AAA is a leader in teen traffic safety initiatives, including driver education and safety awareness,” said Dawn Duffy, AAA Minneapolis spokesperson. “We congratulate the 2009 ExCEL Award winners and applaud their efforts as they, too, lead by example as responsible, proactive community citizens,” added Gail Weinholzer, spokesperson for AAA Minnesota/Iowa. KSTC TV, Channel 45, the League’s broadcast partner, will recognize the 2009 ExCEL award recipients during its broadcast of the winter state tournaments. Each student will also participate in an on-court award ceremony during the halftime of the Class AA girls’ basketball championship game on March 21. The ExCEL award program began in 1996. Award recipients are selected through a multi-level process that involves League member schools and an independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota.
