Monday, September 10, 2007 Humboldt Senior High Site Council Minutes Members Present: Valerie Atkinson (co-chair, non-teaching staff), Kenny Zimmerman (non-teaching staff alternate), Joe Laconic (teaching staff), Preston McMillan (teaching staff, union), Bonnie Bellows (teaching staff), Mike Sodomka (principal), Lauren Rekonen (teaching staff, alternate), Marilyn Mauritz (teaching staff, alternate), Jodi Brennen (community member, Jennifer Purtell (co-chair, parent), Andy Mosca (parent) Guests Present: Steve Aeilts (assistant principal), Catherine Farrell (parent), Susanne Fields (parent), Kari Larson (21st Century Grant Representative), Kandy Hedlund (community member), Gill Zamora (community member, director of the West Side Boys and Girls Club) Not present: Aaron Perrine, Tim Hausker, Sam Buffington, student members
I. Approval of Agenda a. Motion to approve agenda made by M. Sodomka, seconded by J. Laconic. Unanimously approved. II. Approval of August 27, 2007 a. Motion to approve August 27th meeting minutes made by M. Sodomka, seconded by J. Laconic. Unanimously approved. III. Open Forum a. K. Zimmerman: College Access programs are requesting to be on the Humboldt Senior email listserv. b. J. Brennen: Commends M. Sodomka for following up on a community issue. IV. New parent membership a. V. Atkinson: Review of Site Council packet for the benefit of new members. Topics include Robert’s Rules of Order, history of the Humboldt Site Council, Humboldt High School Budget, the role of the site council, SCIP, andpotential new parent and community members b. Nomination made by J. Purtell for Catherine Farrell and Susanne Fields to be new site council members. Unanimously approved. A warm welcome to Catherine and Susanne, our new site council members! V. Principal’s Report a. Enrollment: 932, anticipate a count of 880 students for the October 1st count b. Open house was held last Wednesday, September 5th in the cafeteria and the auditorium. We had a great turnout, more than we ever could have anticipated! c. Humboldt has been in the St. Paul Voice and the Channel 5 news. d. Supt. Carstarphen and many of her closest aides were here last Wednesday and delivered positive feedback about her visit. e. Bill Sommers, our consultant, would like to meet with parents on September 24th to get feedback. It will be here at Humboldt in the library on Sept. 24th from 6:00 – 7:00 and dinner will be provided. Phone calls will be going home informing parents about this event. f. All licensed staff have been hired for the year. 2 ½ Americorps members have been hired as well. g. Saturday, September 15, from 9:00 – 2:00 Westside Football Fiesta will be held on our field with the senior high football game to follow. h. Sodomka will be keeping the Site Council informed of the happenings of the West Side Youth Council. i. Humboldt received the 21st Century Grant, meaning that we will have after-school classes that will be funded through this grant. These classes will be held at Humboldt after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays and also at the Neighborhood House on other days of the week. j. Oct. 3rd is an Early Release Day k. Oct. 12th is Homecoming. Athletes, band members, and JROTC cadets will be handing out gifts to local business. The Homecoming Dance is Friday evening from 7:00 – 10:00 l. First Trimester conferences will be held on Oct. 11th and Oct. 16th. We will be using this opportunity to recruit new parent members for the Site Council. m. On October 17th,9th graders will be taking the Explore Test, the 10th graders will be taking the PLAN Test, and the 11th graders will be taking the PSAT. We are hoping to have a late-start day that day for the 12th graders, who are not testing that day. Another option, which is being explored by the counseling department, is to have all 12th graders go on a college visit on that morning. n. We are very happy about the way that the school year has started. Our new system of having only 2 lunches instead of 3 is working well. VI. New Business a. Our capital bonds proposal was turned down by the district. We as a site council would like to break down our Phase II plans and resubmit a smaller proposal for the next round, which may be in mid-April. b. Gill Zamora, West Side Boys and Girls Club director, is here visiting our site council and would like to be a member of the community who can be a resource for our school. He would like the Boys and Girls Club to be kept aware of what’s going on at Humboldt and how they can help us out. For the past week, over 100 hundred students attend the Boys and Girls Club each day after school. c. J. Brennen: The parking lot lights flicker and it is both annoying and a safety risk. VII.
