Humboldt bids farewell to staff!
Humboldt Senior High bids farewell to Virginia Broich and Rebecca Sauser Christopherson as they retire after a combined total of sixty five plus year in the Saint Paul Public Schools.
Virginia Broich was the Assistant Principal for many years at Humboldt and initiated and support many educational projects such as Small Learning Communities, Academic Success, WOW grant to only mention a few. She spent years in the classroom as both a Social Studies and English teach mostly at the middle school level. Her leadership was appreciated and she will be missed. Her plans include taking a writing class and beginning to write a ‘great American novel’.
Rebecca Sauser Christopherson, the HSTW design coach, has decided to ‘graduate’ again from her alma mater, Humboldt Senior High, after years of work in the Culinary Arts program. She initiated the "Food Factory" a restaurant operated by students that has enhanced the Family and Consumer Science courses for many students interested in food service. Another program of "Product Development", an entrepreneurship course, has offered students the opportunity to start their own business which she shared responsibilities with several other staff members. Her creative skills will be missed as she continues to volunteer her services in educational settings.
Steve Lindberg has decided to change his work environment and will take the opportunity to service as principal in another Saint Paul Public School. His leadership for the past seven years has shown educational progress in the areas of increasing technology, shared management techniques, High School That Work initiatives, and the establishment of Small Learning Communities at Humboldt Senior High. The entire educational community wishes him well in his new adventures.
There are many staff leaving for a variety of reasons such as budget and program cuts, new job opportunities, or to continue their education. We wish them all well and thanks for all the services they provided students and parents at Humboldt.

Many of the educational opportunities that are currently offered at Humboldt have been initiated by very talented staff willing to spend their time developing their teaching skills at conferences providing by the association with the High Schools That Work network. Parents have continually been offered the opportunity to join staff at these conferences. If interested contact, Diane Schroepfer at 651-293-8600 Ex 6263.
Korea comes to Humboldt students
We are delighted to announce that Natalie Hamilton and Lee Thao have received full scholarships for a month of intensive study of Korean this summer. Natalie's fascination with learning about her birth country has led her to study Korean language and culture but never for an intensive or extended period of time. Lee's first experience with Korean cinema when she was in 7th grade led her to begin what has become an ongoing research project to learn more about the Korean people, their country and their language.
Lee has received a scholarship from the Freeman Foundation and Natalie received her scholarship from Gear Up/ETS. The Freeman Foundation has established a scholarship fund to benefit students who wish to study Asian languages and cultures. The Gear Up/ETS program that operates at Humboldt throughout the year provides scholarships to active students who wish to continue their studies during the summer in an area of personal interest.Their scholarships exceed $5,000 and we will be eager to learn of their experiences this coming fall.
Many people in Minnesota are familiar with the Concordia College Language Village program that offers two-week and four-week language and culture programs for youth from all over the United States in 13 languages including English for people from overseas! The language villages include French, Spanish, German, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, Swedish, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Italian, and Korean. If you are interested in providing this opportunity for one or more of your children you can find information at their website: www.concordialanguagevillages.org
Because of their enthusiasm and love of all things Korean Ms Hopen sent out a request to staff to donate Korean costumes for our international costume collection. Mrs. Sun Wisneski, a former Humboldt staff member, was please to be able to provide us with two beautifully maintained Korean "hangbok" (historically significant dresses). The students smiles indicate how happy they are to benefit from the generosity of Mrs. Wisneski.
French Club, Apple Pie and Travel
The aroma of French apple pie was created by French Club students who prepared the traditional open-faced pie at their last meeting for the school year on May 5,. French students learned how to make a pie crust as professionally as the famed American French cook Julia Child and carefully rotated quarter slices of apples around the top in the design of a rose. Madame Hopen brought the recipe and the technique from her French "grandmother" who worked her life in a bakery in central France.
The students took pride in their work and as visitors passed by the French room admiring their culinary art the students could hardly wait to taste their creations. Many even came back the next day for the leftovers and took recipes home to prepare the pie for families.
Many of the same students also participated in the annual French field trip to the Hotel Sofitel on May 7 where they dined in elegance at a meal prepared by the French chefs. Prior to going to the luncheon students had visited the French art collection at the Minneapolis Institute of Art where they readily identified art works by Monet, Gauguin and Renoir. Students have been learning about art in a number of classes at Humboldt and had also had a brief overview of 800 years of art in France as one of their classes.
Students planning to go to France next spring have already begun fund raising and they will appreciate your support as they work to make yet another dream come true...experiencing Paris in the springtime. Bonnes vacances!
GEAR UP GETS READY FOR COLLEGE!!!
Preparing for college is a difficult task for anyone, at any age. The St. Olaf GEAR UP program can help you and your family prepare for college, even throughout the summer months. This summer, Sandra Forsyth, a GEAR UP Academic Advisor will be meeting with the "soon to be" seniors and their parent(s)/guardian(s). Sandra will discuss the process of applying for college and financial aid as well as what to expect during the upcoming academic school year. We do not recruit for St. Olaf College, instead we expose students to different kinds of colleges (2-year community, technical, 4-year public and private, private institutes, and trade and vocational schools) and assist students in making positive choices that will help them achieve their goals. All program services are free of charge.
Feel Free To Call Sandra Forsyth or Julia Seper, GEAR UP Director, toll-free at (877) 521-3642 if you have any questions.
