Great Things Going On! October 24, 2007

As I think back over these past six weeks of school, we have began the year with upbeat energy!  Students immediately noticed the new flooring and updated lockers and were impressed and have been responding.  We appreciate our students and want them to have a meaningful high school experience.  These are times to remember in which students begin to define themselves.

Humboldt Senior High is truly a great school!  Since this year began our boys soccer team are City Champs(!), we’ve added after-school theatre, Hmong and Spanish classes for students, community members are regular volunteers, and homecoming was a hit!

We appreciate our family involvement in our school.  Our orientation night in August was a door buster and conferences in the cafeteria continued to demonstrate your willingness to get involved.  Please remember you can always access data (attendance, current grades, lunch account…) on your student by setting a Parent Portal account at https://ereport.spps.org/campus/portal/stpaul.jsp

Other opportunities include attending a sporting event, site council or PTO meeting, volunteering in a classroom or coming to the Title I Parent Night November 1, 2007 from 4:30-6:15 PM.  These are all opportunities for parents/guardians to positively impact the path of their student’s life.  Please take this opportunity to make the world a better place.

Our community is getting involved more than ever.  LaFamilia Family Guidance Center has an office within our building, alumni are volunteering in classrooms and athletics, we are continuing to meet regularly with Neighborhood House staff, St. Paul Parks, Boys and Girls Club and other agencies to engage our community. We also are continuing our relationship with St. Olaf Educational Talent Search, Gear Up, Upward Bound programs, and Admission Possible to best prepare our students life beyond high school.

EcoLab continue to be an outstanding partner!  Humboldt Senior High School staff received $28,524 in Visions for Learning grants from EcoLab this year.  EcoLab funds our AVID program, donates school supplies to our students, purchases computers, and provides funding for additional programs.  They recognize the potential in our students and want to invest in our future.

Humboldt Senior High School teachers are working in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).  Our professionals having student centered discussions about learning focusing on these four questions:  “What do we want students to learn?”, “how will you know when they have learned it?”, “what will you do when students don’t get it?” and “how will you enrich it for those who do get it?”  We then work together to implement curriculum which covers concepts in depth while ensuring mastery.  We are using a strategic process to improve our school.

I would be remiss if I didn’t request your involvement.  When I talk to my colleagues and wathch the news, we are noticing an upturn students which are considering to be involved in gangs.  Talk to your child about the dangers of these choices.  Humboldt takes gang activity seriously, students involved in gang activity will be suspended up to ten days and will be referred to the police.  We have a safe school and will ensure it continues to be a safe environment.

We are working to make these years the best times of your student’s life.  We are improving our school and working to involve all our stakeholders to enhance Humboldt for our students.  We do want your help.  Please increase your involvement at our school and encourage your child to get involved at school.  Please be part of our solution.
