Welcome Back!!!

Welcome back to a changing Humboldt Senior High. This fall, as students return, they will notice a few changes as we move to Smaller Learning Communities. All incoming 9th graders will be entering the 9th Grade Academy. This Academy will be housed primarily on 3rd floor with orange banners designating their location.

Last spring during registration, 10th grade students chose an academy for the year. The three Academies for the 10-12 grades are: Community Leadership Academy (CLA), Humanities, and Science, Engineering and Technology (SETA). The students will remain in these for the year with the option of moving at the end of the year. As with the 9th grade academy, each Academy is also housed in a different area of the building designated with colored banners. CLA has green banners, Humanities has blue, and SETA has red. There are still common areas such as Science labs, library space, Family and Consumer Science, and the Physical Education areas. Teachers have moved rooms from department locations to their Academy areas according to which academy they belong to. Because of this, all students should look carefully at the room numbers for their classes on their schedules. Teachers are not where they use to be!!!

The other major change all students will find this fall is the change from HAWK Connection to Advisories. All students, 9-12, are now assigned to an Academy Advisory. More on this will be coming in the future.

Teachers have been working very hard this summer changing curriculum to meet the focus areas of their academies, developing academy specific courses, and working on the Academy Advisories. We are looking forward to an exciting year!

If anyone has any questions on the small learning communities or would like to participate on a community advisory board for any of the Academies, please contact Diane Schroepfer, SLC Program Manager at 651.293.8600, ext. 1263.

From Steve Lindberg

Greetings and Welcome from Humboldt Sr. High, the best high school in the city of St. Paul!

We have done our planning! Teachers and staff have been busy this summer writing curriculum, and each of the new academies are set to go. As you are aware, the Ninth Grade Academy had their pilot year last year with great success. They will be continuing their work this year with a focus on the students reading. This year the ninth grade is split into core teams. Each student is associated with one of the teams.

The other three academies, SETA (Science, Engineering and Technology 10-12), CLA (Community Leadership Academy 10-12) and Humanities Academy (10-12) will be in their first year and are fired up to work with our upperclassmen to support the students in their educational focus for the future. This will support the new 3 R’s of Small Learning Academies: Rigor, a strong academic program for each student, Relationship, each student will have an adult in the building whom they can work with and who will provide a strong role model, and Relevance, education for today’s students, that has to be tied to the future and the interest of the students. All of the planning and time spent by our staff has been supported by the two "Small Learning Community" grants (Federal and Gates) which Humboldt received last year. Each grant will run for another two years to support the activities of our students.

We are continuing our relationship with "High Schools that Work," our comprehensive school reform model. HSTW staff continues to provide staff development and support as we move farther into the great opportunities that small learning communities will provide to our students. The work over the past two years has been difficult and tiring at times, but it is starting to pay off for our students with better scores.

As we move forward, our students continue to do better and better. We are looking forward to continued significant growth at Humboldt Senior High this school year and in the future.

News for Incoming Ninth Graders

We are delighted that you have decided to send your child to Humboldt. The teachers in the 9th Grade Academy will make every effort this year to prepare your child for academic and social success in their remaining years in high school and beyond. This success will depend on yourself, your child and on us. We must work as a team and communication will be critical. To begin this communication we invite you to a parents’ night at school on September 23rd. Complimentary dinner will be served at 6:00 pm and this will be followed by an informational session. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. Our phone numbers and extensions are listed below along with our email addresses. We will be contacting you every two weeks or so, particularly if your child is having problems in one of his/her classes.

It has been shown through research that attendance is critical to academic success. We ask that you schedule health and dental appointments, and vacations outside of school hours whenever possible.

Homework help is available in the library on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. This is staffed with teachers from various subject areas and provides students with an opportunity for one-on-one help with their schoolwork. If necessary, there is assistance in covering the bus cost to get home.

The following is a list of supplies that students should have for each grade class:

* notebooks * folders * pencils * pens
