SITE COUNCIL MEETING
March 14th, 2005

MINUTES

The meeting was held at Humboldt Senior High School at 6:00 pm.

Attendance: Becki Hamilton (Parent, Co-Chair), Valerie Atkinson (Staff, Co-Chair), Bonnie Bellows (Staff-Treasurer), John Bianchi (Principle) Preston McMillan (Staff, Union Steward) Alison Dern (Gear-up), John Hines (Parent), Chou Lee (Student), Diane Schroepfer (Staff Alternate), Karen Woodward (Support Our Schools), David Mergens (Staff), Gary Partney (Staff), Chris Vasques (Student), Carol Hugely (Parent), Marilyn Mauritz (Staff).

1. Approval of Agenda -
Motion to approve agenda motioned by Dave Mergens, and seconded by Becki Hamilton

2. Approval of February 14, 2005 minutes
Changes submitted prior to meeting
 Motion to approve minutes as amended so moved by Becki H., seconded by Valarie A.

3. New Business
Open Forum -
Allison Dern provide the following update regarding Gear-Up activities:
- 18 Eleventh graders participated in the St. Olaf  Gear-Up program
- Scheduled an overnight trip to Duluth and Eau Claire
- Instituted a letter writing campaign at the Capital to the Legislature
- Awards Dinner will be held May 19th at Metro State College.

4. Principles Report -
      Principle John Bianchi reported the following:
      -    Announced the establishment of a new student newspaper.
- Reported the Snow Days activities were a major success, and had one of the best turnouts in years.
- 1st Annual Staff and Student Basketball game. Teachers won.  There was a large student participation complete with  the Humboldt Band drum line, hoola hoops, and garbage  can serenade.
- Black History Month was observed with 207 essays submitted.  This was more than the entire city of Minneapolis, and the most in St. Paul.  The winner received a $1000.00 scholarship from Coca-Cola.  Tomicka Mitchell won the over-all art contest.  The Parent Involvement day included the most number of parents ever.
- State Wrestling Tournament - Julian Mancha placed 6th overall in State finals. Principle Bianchi indicated there might be a Julian Mancha day observed.
- Test results are back from BST with good results.
- 2005 graduation will be on June 8th at 5:30 pm. Rehearsal will be 8 am that morning.
- May 11th will be Senior's honors night.
- Senior party is taking shape.  Forty letters sent to area businesses for contributions.  ROTC to contact VFW and Legion for Contributions.
- The March 3rd band concert was a success.
- The music department is attempting to establish a choir.

5. Academies and Assessment -
Diane Schroepfer reported the following:
- February 9th was an early release day with 9th grade academy observing a respect retreat.
- SETA academy participated in a science competition building roller coasters and towers.
- CLA-CAPS went to the Blaine Sports Center on a field trip.
- 9th Grade Academy participated in a career inventory test.  Evaluated for a choice of three careers.
- Piloting a senior project to establish requirements for an academy seal on graduate's diplomas.

6. SCIP-
     Gary Partney reported the following:
- HILT meeting to be held Tuesday March 16th.
- Defined three goals:
a. MCA - Scores up (Reading, Writing, Math)
b. BST Achievement
c. Improving proficiency in English with TEAE and SOLOM
- John Hines raised issue requesting a fourth goal to address community and parent
issues..
    
7. Budget Information Review -
      Valerie Atkinson reported the following:
- The April Site Council meeting will focus on the budget with the following topics:
a. Budget Presentation
b. Title I - Real documentation on Parent Involvement
c. Title I - Families and Schools

8. Parent Engagement -
       John Hines reported the following:
- Received a list of extra-curricular activities for parent involvement.
- Ann Gangl completed parent survey
- Principle John Bianchi was requested to create a list of 9th grade students parents contact information and e-mail them to Kari.
- Kari Dennison to start phone bank activities on March 18th.

 

9. Senior Party -
- John and Robin Kennedy (Parents) have taken an active role in organizing this
year's party.

10.  New Business -
      Chai Lee (Student) reported the following:
- The new student newspaper has a Thursday deadline for articles submitted
- 6th annual Leadership Council will be Oct. 9th and 10th 2005.  There will be a need for funding to pay the entrance fee.
