Calvin Gilkey is a senior at Humboldt Sr. high school. He is an outstanding young man, one which all should emulate. Calvin Gilkey was awarded the Minnesota Youth of the Year from the Boys and Girls club. The award was for an excellent club member and also for a person who did a lot for their community. He competed against eight other individuals all from the ages of 14 and older. Calvin was one of the oldest recipients. The criteria for this award was each individual had to give a speech based on six topics; Family, School involvement, Community involvement, Service to club and two other topics. Each individual also had to give an interview about the previous six topics. Calvin received the award on April 16th, 2008. The regional competition is on June 16th-17th of 2008. When asked what his first reaction was he responded with; “I was happy and in shock because I had to go against a lot of good competition.” Calvin started going to the Boys and Girls club in the summer of 2006. He has always gone to the Westside of St. Paul Boys and Girls club. He averaged going about five times a week and would stay until they closed. When asked what his favorite part of the Boys and Girls club is he responded; “Knowing that I can be myself and no one judges me, also I feel comfortable there.” Calvin said that he would recommend the Boys and Girls club for everyone because you get to meet people from your school and from other schools. The people there actually care about you and want you to achieve all your dreams. They also help you achieve those dreams. Calvin participated in JROTC at Humboldt for four years. Calvin is planning to go to post secondary education at Saint Olaf next year. Calvin plans to major in computer science.
