We Are Demonstrating Improvement

Great News!

Our ninth grade students increased the percent of students passing the MCA-II GRAD Writing test by over 23 percentage points when comparing April 2008 with April 2007 scores!

It is exciting to see hard work pay off.  As I think back over this past school year, I’m refreshed as I recall the great things that our students, staff and community have done.  Our students started this year with new tile and carpeting in the school, a new stadium on an athletic field and a new permanent lock installed on their locker.  Our boys’ soccer team won the city championship, increasing school spirit and our staff worked to examine how students learn best and applied those lessons to improve instruction.  Throughout this year, we worked to provide a high quality education within a personalized setting.

We’ve reached out to our community to strengthen relationships and enhance our students’ experience here.  Many of our graduating seniors worked with Ecolab staff writing résumés, conducting mock interviews and other career exploration activities.  We recognized school must be engaging to students to increase its effectiveness.  We’re increasing opportunities for more hands-on career preparation, improving opportunities for students to take classes at St. Paul College or internships with corporations.  We’re also increasing our student involvement in our college access programs.  This has resulted student receiving scholarships, for example our scholars received scholarships to Augsburg, St. Loaf, St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities to name a few.

As we wrap up this year, we must also keep our eyes on the next.  Humboldt Senior High School is expecting a decline in enrollment of 63 students.  As a result we are reducing one special education classroom teacher and five support staff.  We will be continuing to the small class sizes and personal atmosphere Humboldt is known for.

The district is also moving programs:

·           Highland Park Senior’s Deaf/Hard of Hearing program will be moving into Humboldt Senior High School

·           Humboldt’s Program for Social Development (a self-contained classroom serving students with emotional and behavioral disorders) will be moving to Highland Park.

We also will be continuing to formalize our revitalization plan, moving toward an Environmental Studies and College and Career Prep theme.

As you can see, we’ve had a fruitful year and we’re looking forward with excitement to the future.  We will maintain our focus on preparing students for life beyond Humboldt, engaging our community ensuring our students’ success.

I hope you have a relaxing and rejuvenating summer; we’ll be busy preparing for the year to come!
