The Humboldt Complex Will Be Changing

Humboldt Junior and Senior High Schools receive Title I funds.  Schools which have more than 70% students receive free or reduced lunch qualify for Title I.  86% of Humboldt Senior High School students receive free or reduced lunch.  Title I funds are monies from the federal government to support reading and math instruction.

Humboldt Schools did not make Adequately Yearly Progress (AYP) as measured by their students’ scores on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment II (MCA II) exams.

  1. If a school which is receiving Title I funds does not make AYP in their first year, the school is held harmless.
  2. If a school which is receiving Title I funds does not make AYP two years in a row, the school must send a letter to parents/guardians to allow students to transfer to another school which has higher test scores.  Humboldt Senior High School is as this point.
  3. If a school which is receiving Title I funds does not make AYP three years in a row, the school must send a letter to parent allowing for transfer and providing supplemental educational services (after school tutoring) for students.  Humboldt Junior High School is at this point.
  4. If a school which is receiving Title I funds does not make AYP four years in a row the school must send a letter to parent allowing for transfer and providing supplemental educational services (after school tutoring) for students and work with the state to develop a plan to re-design their school.  This is called corrective action.
  5. If a school which is receiving Title I funds does not make AYP five years in a row, the school must send a letter to parent allowing for transfer and providing supplemental educational services (after school tutoring) for students and implement the corrective action plan..

Arlington, Harding and Humboldt Senior High Schools are the only high schools which are receiving Title I funding and therefore are subject to the sanctions listed above.

To avoid corrective action from the state, Humboldt Junior High School will redesign its program for the 2008-09 school year.  Saint Paul Public Schools expects the program to be articulated from seventh through twelfth grade, therefore Humboldt Senior High School will also be redesigning its program.

There will be a community meeting to get your input on the proposals, once they are finalized on Wednesday December 12th from 5:00-7:00 PM in the senior high.

There is no finalized proposal for the redesign of our school.  We are working with the District to develop a program which best meets the needs of our students.  As plans are finalized, I will post updates on this website.
