Junior Achievement Presentation-Student Representative No representative came. 4. Principal’s Report –M. Sodomka & T. Williams and discussion Humboldt Junior High: Restructuring will be moving forward. Prior to last community meeting we talked about joining site councils to plan for restructuring. It makes sense for us to move forward together, budget, staffing, curriculum and SCIP, and therefore we should combine site councils. Jr. High has disbanded its site council. The district as secured funding to move forward with the planning for restructuring. In order for us to move forward mindfully, we need a small team of teachers to assist in planning. A week ago last Friday we were informed funding had been secured. District representatives came out on to meet with staff. 6 teachers (3 jr. and 3 sr.) are moving forward with the planning. We now have a full time science and social studies and four part time English, technology, and math teachers. Brad and Julie Blue are the consultant to assist with planning, they are heavy in tech and engineering professional development for teachers. They have worked in different schools to set up the programs. They have visited and toured the site. February 20 is the planning date for the start. They want to continue with the existing partners and give us a program, rather work with our existing programs to develop a new program. Jr. High has their A/B honor rolls assembly next Thursday evening. Last Friday we had a mentoring lunch at the Neighborhood House, with mentors and mentees. Tomas Smith, Deputy Police Chief was the key note, speaking about Obama’s inauguration. Other mentors also shared their stories and team building activities followed. Piano recital occurred on a cold evening with a great turn out. Humboldt Junior and Senior are officially closed for new students. Typically we receive a high number of students. No word on the junior high facility plans from the district level. The planning committee may develop suggestions. The consulting team is set for planning; implementation monies will be available from other funds. Additional funding uses have not been solidified. The planning committee should have recommendations for the funds. Recruiting has occurred at several elementary and junior highs, with a positive response from families, across the district. District goal is to balance special education numbers across the district, the reality is the sr. high is 28% and jr. high is 31%. The district planning to balance the special education percentages. The district is also working to balance our mobility rate, by closing our school to new students in an attempt to level the board across the district. The perception of our school has impacted our enrollment. Without exempting more special education students from testing, we may continue to struggle with our assessment results, and therefore AYP. Our special education program at Humboldt was established as a district program and we’ve been recognized as a high quality special education program. NCLB has negatively impacted our school, though we are doing tremendous work with our students and need to get that message out. We need to be aware that by reducing the percentages, we will also be reducing staffing and therefore possibly isolating special ed staff. The State is now considering putting a growth model in school report cards. Tomorrow Red Bull deployment Roy Wilkins 5-6, bus leaves at Budget-district down $25 million, stimulus package will help Tuberculosis screening, Mantoux test of those students in contact with infected student Honors assembly today Snow daze coronation tomorrow @ 10 Lunch with the principal on Friday 11-12:30 March 5, conference 4-7 and band concert 7-?
