Parents Preparing for Spring and Beyond

Welcome Spring!  I hope you’ve had a relaxing spring break!  We are hitting the ground running, wrapping up this school year and laying down the foundation for future success.

We’re having a busy spring:  Completing finals, prepping for the MCA-II’s while starting our final quarter and preparing for next year.  In case you missed it, former Humboldt Senior High School student (class of ’42) and World War II veteran, Richard Thill, was here to receive his long-overdue diploma.  Richard joined the Navy Reserves in his junior year of high school.  In November of 1941, he was called to active duty in defense of what was termed a “National Emergency Pending.” He was sent to San Diego, where he was assigned to his ship. The ship was sent to the territorial waters of Hawaii to perform coastal defense duties. On the morning of December 7, 1941, the ship was on patrol off the entrance to Pearl Harbor. They spotted a submarine periscope training a US Ship into the harbor, and the USS Ward opened fire, sinking the Japanese Mini Sub, thus firing the first shots by the United States of World War II. They radioed their actions to the headquarters at Pearl Harbor, but the report went unheeded. About one-hour and fifteen minutes later, the Japanese Navy aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor.

To ensure everyone graduates, I need your help.  We have the MCA-II’s coming up in the coming weeks.  Like always, be sure your child gets a good night sleep, eats breakfast, studies hard, and tries their hardest on the MCA-II’s.  Our students’ success reflects on all of us.  We also have the A/B honor roll assembly coming up.  If your child wasn’t invited to the ceremony, reflect on why and work together to develop a plan which promotes success.  We also have prom coming up – remind your child to use his/her brain and do the right thing!  By encouraging our youth to use their brains at intellectual and social events, we’ll establish healthy roots for their continued growth.

Looking to next year, we’re planning to have common over-arching themes which students will be engaged in across the curriculum.

The year will look like this:

·           1st Quarter: The River, Gardens and Agriculture

·           2nd Quarter: Energy/Transportation

·           3rd Quarter: Ecosystems/Biomes

·           4th Quarter: Gardens/Agriculture (this will continue in the fall)

In addition to this, we’ll be expecting every student to use AVID strategies, as all teachers will be AVID trained this summer.

Humboldt’s environmental studies and college/career prep focus will have noticeable impact.  We’re working together to create a school which best prepares our youth for adulthood.  I’m looking forward to sharing the wealth of our hard work as we persevere together.  Please come to parent teacher conferences on May 7th and see our growth!
