Looking Back and Moving Forward

As I look back and think forward, I feel we’ve had another outstanding year, but recognize there are always we can improve.  We are maintaining our focus on preparing students to be successful beyond Humboldt Senior High School.

I expect every student to graduate from Humboldt and move on to college.  Humboldt has worked to coordinate our programming to best prepare our students. Over two-thirds of our students involved in a college access program (AVID, Gear Up, ETS, Admission Possible, Upward Bound, MEP,…) resulting in multiple college visits.  Our seniors again impressed us by receiving numerous scholarships from prestigious colleges/universities throughout the United States.  We’ve also worked to increase our students’ awareness of applying their education, through tours of companies such as Traveler and Ecolab or internships at others. Our students must prepared to be successful in life, whether its college, work, military or another path.

We’ve also recognize that our students need to be supported socially and emotionally to ensure their success.  We have many clubs (Asian, Latino, African, GSA, FIRST ROBOTICS, Friendship Club…), fine arts and athletic opportunities to develop our youth beyond formal academics.  Please encourage your child to get involved in one of our many clubs.  We also have both private and school-based social work and guidance services to provide additional support for students in need.

We are not perfect.  I recognize we also must continue to improve at reaching out to our families and community.  Without your support and influence we are missing an opportunity to support our students and improve our school.  We also need to market the “Humboldt advantage”, great things happen in our small school.  We value the gifts and talents our students bring to Humboldt, we will continue to work to get that message out.

As you know, we are in the midst of developing our environmental studies/college and career prep focus.  We could use your help.  The Ford Motor Company and Extreme Makeover are a teaming up to award one lucky K-12 school with an eco-friendly makeover of up to $250,000. Students (18 or older), parents, community members are encouraged to nominate Humboldt for the green school makeover by submitting an online survey at www.educatetoescape.com.. Tell your family, friends, and neighbors to nominate Humboldt for this great opportunity.

We are working to improve our school and want your help!
